Amarnath Yatra
The sacred journey to Baba Barfani is one of the most important pilgrimage experiences for devotees of Lord Shiva. Surrounded by the high mountains of Jammu and Kashmir, the Holy Cave attracts pilgrims who undertake the difficult journey with faith, patience and devotion. The Amarnath Yatra requires advance planning because registration, medical fitness, route permits, weather and high-altitude conditions all need attention.
Purewave Tours & Travels helps pilgrims organise the travel portion of their journey with accommodation, road transfers, base-camp arrangements and itinerary planning. The Shrine Board remains the official authority for registration, permits, medical requirements and pilgrimage rules. For 2026, the confirmed pilgrimage period was July 3 to August 28, while registration through designated bank branches began on April 15.
Amarnath Yatra 2026 – Dates, Registration & Medical Process
The official Amarnath Yatra 2026 registration process required pilgrims to complete the prescribed registration procedure and obtain a valid Yatra Permit. The Shrine Board announced that advance registration through designated bank branches began on April 15, 2026. Registration was subject to route-wise daily quotas and operated on a first-come, first-served basis.
For 2026, pilgrims had to provide a valid Compulsory Health Certificate issued by an authorised doctor or medical institution. The official guidelines stated that the CHC had to be issued on or after April 8, 2026. The registration process also included Aadhaar-based biometric eKYC, with manual entry and webcam-based photograph capture available as a fallback where biometric authentication failed.
The Shrine Board also specified age restrictions. For the 2026 pilgrimage, people below 13 years or above 70 years were not registered, and women beyond six weeks of pregnancy were not permitted to undertake the Yatra.
The Yatra Permit is important because the route is controlled through designated access points. A permit for the Baltal route is marked accordingly, while a Pahalgam-route permit carries the corresponding route designation. The 2026 guidelines also stated that registration for a particular date stopped seven days before that date.
Medical fitness should not be treated as a formality. The pilgrimage reaches high altitude and involves substantial physical effort. Pilgrims should speak with their doctor before travelling, particularly if they have any existing medical concern. Carry prescribed medicines, drink water regularly and avoid pushing yourself beyond your normal physical capacity.
The official Shrine Board also provides helplines and publishes health, route and registration updates. Always verify the latest information with the Shrine Board before making pilgrimage arrangements.

For 2026 specifically, pilgrims should not be offered helicopter transport as an available Yatra service. The Shrine Board announced that the Baltal and Pahalgam Yatra axes were designated as a No Flying Zone from July 1 until completion of the 2026 Yatra, so helicopter services for pilgrim travel were unavailable during that season.
Amarnath Yatra Route Guide – Baltal vs Pahalgam Route – Which is Best?
There are two traditional approaches to the Holy Cave: the Baltal route and the Pahalgam route. The official Shrine Board describes the Pahalgam route through Chandanwari, Pissu Top, Sheshnag and Panchtarni, while the Baltal route proceeds through Domail and Barari towards the Holy Cave.
Baltal Route
The Baltal route is shorter but considerably steep in sections. The official route information puts the trek at around 14 km from Baltal to the Holy Cave. Because of the shorter distance, some physically fit pilgrims prefer this option, but the shorter distance does not mean that the trek is easy.
Baltal is near Sonamarg and can be reached by road from Srinagar. Pilgrims can use ponies or palkis where permitted and available under the notified arrangements.
Pahalgam Route
The Pahalgam approach is longer and follows the traditional route through Chandanwari, Pissu Top, Sheshnag and Panchtarni. The Shrine Board lists the route at around 32 km. The longer route generally requires more time and planning but provides a gradual pilgrimage experience through several camps.
Baltal vs Pahalgam
The choice should depend on physical fitness, available time, medical advice, trekking preference and the arrangements available for your selected Yatra date. It is better to choose a route based on your physical ability rather than simply selecting the shorter option.
Day-wise Itinerary for Amarnath Yatra
Day 1 – Arrival in Jammu or Srinagar
Arrive in Jammu or Srinagar according to your travel plan. Meet the driver and proceed to the selected hotel. Use the evening for rest, document checking and preparation. Pilgrims should keep their original photo ID and Yatra Permit safely accessible.
Day 2 – Travel to Pahalgam or Baltal
Proceed towards the selected base camp by road. A Pahalgam itinerary generally allows an overnight stay before the trek, while a Baltal plan can include accommodation near the base camp. Spend the evening preparing warm clothing, rain protection, medicines and trekking essentials.
Day 3 – Begin the Pilgrimage
Start early according to the route and access instructions issued for your Yatra date. Carry only necessary items and remain with your group. Follow the marked trail and instructions from security and Yatra authorities.

Depending on the itinerary and route, proceed towards the Holy Cave for darshan and begin the return journey. The exact schedule depends on route conditions, access restrictions, weather and the pilgrim’s pace.
Day 5 – Return to Srinagar or Jammu
After completing the pilgrimage, return to the selected city. Keep this day relatively light because the trek can be physically demanding. Rest before continuing with any additional Kashmir sightseeing.
Day 6 – Optional Kashmir Stay
Pilgrims with additional time can stay in Srinagar and explore Dal Lake, Mughal Gardens or other nearby attractions. This extra day can also provide recovery time before the onward journey.
